iPhone Charging Cable Fire/Melting/Burnt

vaalea vaalea: I had plugged in my iPhone to listen to binaural beats while sleeping, as they double as white noise when I want to sleep in. I woke up to find the melted/burnt connector next to my head, on the bed. It really shook me up once I realized what could have happened while in a deep sleep. The iPhone attached to it still worked, though I could see the edge was ever so slightly melted and a faint scorch mark on my case. Apple Store replaced my phone and cord to they could send the old ones in for investigation. Only one of the more junior employees seemed sympathetic or apologetic. As soon as I saw the melted connector my immediate reaction was to google it of course, and I came across many many similar posted accounts... and posted a few somewhat related ones for good measure. However the comment posted that I saw when I first started reading up on it, where the user went to Rogers and was given an upgrade to 3GS… that post eludes me. I know I saw it! :( No such luck, was supposedly impossible to PAY for an upgrade to 3GS. I thought a 3GS might retain its value better than a 3G once the 4G and 4.0 OS is released... since I was getting a new phone anyway. ________________________________________

Tim Colbourne Yesterday I connected my iPhone 3G to my computer's USB port and left it to charge. Three hours later it caught fire. The fire started in the space between the lead and the phone, and resulted in a couple of pins fusing together. Although the main functions of the phone are apparently unaffected, the device won't connect to the PC which means I can neither charge it nor transfer data. Result: one dead iPhone. This seems to be an extremely rare occurrence. I've found one other account, on a Swedish website in August 2008. In that instance Apple dragged their feet about replacing the handset: I'm taking it back to the store tomorrow, so it remains to be seen what they'll say in my case. There is clearly a major safety issue here. There are many accounts of iPhones getting hot when charging, and it now appears that they can get hot enough to ignite the plastic surrounding the data cable. It may be that the heat from the port pins initially ignited the small bits of fluff which can gather in the recesses of the phone and the charger: I don't know. Even if that is the case, it is something consumers should be warned about. Perhaps iPhones in future should be sold with a little brush for cleaning out these recesses. Or perhaps the hardware needs to be modified to prevent the phone from getting so hot in the first place. *UPDATE* Apple called yesterday (4th March) to say their engineers are keen to examine the phone to find out exactly what went wrong. They're sending me a replacement in the meantime. More news when I get it. *UPDATE* A new handset finally arrived on 18th March. I won't say it was the easiest process. Apple's Europe HQ in Ireland explained that ordinarily this would be classed as 'accidental damage', and would not be covered under warranty. Apparently, iPhone fire are so rare that the company assumes that faulty parts are not to blame, and that it must be in some way connected to user error. Thanks, guys. In my case I was lucky that the Apple engineers had seen the story, checked out the photo, and wanted to get their hands on the phone in return for a new one. http://www.aromanthought.com/2009/03/iphone-on-fire.html ________________________________________

Emil Ahlén iPhone: It Burns! iPhone explosions next? STOCKHOLM (Rixstep) -- Emil Ahlén only had his iPhone a month when it suddenly started burning. The battery charger melted; flames started shooting up. 'Lucky for me the device was on the floor and not on the bed as it usually is. This could have ended in catastrophe', says Emil Ahlén. Emil Ahlén bought his iPhone just over a month ago. But he wasn't a happy camper for long. A few weeks later it started burning when the battery was being charged. Emil was wakened by the smell of smoke. The battery charger had melted and flames were shooting up. Emil took up a towel and was able to quickly douse the fire before it spread to other objects on the floor. Monkey in the Middle 'All week long I've tried to get support from Apple', says Emil. 'But they just send me to the carrier (Telia) who naturally send me back to Apple again. And the carrier Telia say there is nothing they can do - that I am under contract and I cannot cancel even though my iPhone is no longer usable!' We Never Heard of Such a Thing! Telia's crack PR department claim they've never before heard of combustible Apple devices. 'Our sales campaign has been very successful and we've had absolutely no issues whatsoever with these fantastic devices', said Telia PR rep Iréne Krohn between her teeth. Telia recommend returning combustible Apple iPhones to the boutiques where they've been purchased if they ever melt or catch fire again. 'Just pop in and tell them your Apple iPhone's melting, catching fire. Of course they'll replace the device or fix the old one depending on the extent of the damage', says the amiable Krohn. Surprise: 'No Comment' Apple of Sweden were contacted for comments. Unsurprisingly they have none. They attempted instead to refer matters to their PR offices in the UK and Timbuktu. They do however wish to point out the following. At Apple the customer always comes first. There have been no iPhones melting or catching fire. No one has any issues whatsoever with Apple's fantastic iPhone. Emil Ahlén doesn't even exist. He's a figment of someone's imagination. Apple PR have not refused to comment; they've not been contacted in the first place. http://rixstep.com/1/20080819,00.shtml ________________________________________

BlueSkyBlueWind Aug 15, 2009, 11:37 AM BlueSkyBlueWind iPhone 3G charger burnt and melted! 2 days ago when I came back from work, I was almost shocked to find that the connector part of the usb cable plugged into the wall charger was burnt and melted! Thankfully, the damage was only to the connector part, but not sure what could have happened if something nearby caught the fire from the heat! I have no idea what happened. My wife didn't even notice it (who was at home the whole day) until I showed it to her. It wasn't connected (other than to the power plug) to anything so not sure what have caused the burn and melt I thought all the explosions and melt-down of iPhone/iPods were the stories from another land, but I guess I am a victim myself although the damage wasn't as bad as others, but if my iphone had been hooked up to the usb cable, I am sure the phone itself might have been also severely damaged. After taking the photo, I am thinking about contacting Apple about this, but what do you guys think? Any idea why this happened? ... I am at the hospital right now and was writing the first post while waiting for the doctor. (these days hospitals have wireless connections, very nice ) Will post the picture once I go home, but it won't be until late tonight. It looks like the connector part was burnt by a cigarette lighter... but of course we don't have such a thing at home... The USB cable and the wall charger are the ones came with my iPhone. No eBay cheapo charger - although I have one as my car charger. No pets. I have a young son, but the cable was on the counter where he can't reach. This is not a fake story of some sort. What would I gain by posting a fabricated story here? Anyways, picture coming up later today. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=766137 ________________________________________

tammweaver tammweaver iPhone and USB cord caught on fire and melted My phone was plugged in using USB cord. We smelled and then saw a stream of smoke and that the USB and phone were melting. Explanations??? What you can't see in the picture is that the end of the phone is melted too. I'm scared to plug it in any charger. jlawson09 Dec 1, 2008, 10:07 AM jlawson09 MY STORY I found my phone cable melted to my carpet floor a few days ago. It was plugged into the new usb power adapter (previous one was recalled), which was plugged into a surge protector. I have two iPhones, the other cable was untouched. Both in the same location. Called apple, found them to be completely apologetic and they have sent a replacement cable. I posted a thread on the Apple website forums and it was deleted within minutes. After further speaking with friends and family, I will be filling a claim to at least have my carpet replaced. Its the least they can do. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=541786&page=2 ________________________________________

boneclinks Sun, 08/17/2008 - 5:48pm .boneclinks I didnt know who to tell after this happened and i had seen an earlier post about somone being burnt by their iphone 3G, so i thought this would be a good place to tell my story. So, I woke up this morning and was walking around with my shoes off, when i stepped on somthing hot and burnt my foot. I looked down and saw a warped and charred iphone 3G charger that i had recently got with the phone. I called Apple and they said they could get me into a local apple store to replace the burnt charger, but when i went the guys there had no idea what i was talking about and told me that i would need an appointment to talk to anyone. I then just asked to buy a new one because i didnt wanna wait around all day, and somone else working there saw the burnt charger i was carying and replaced mine for a new one. My foot has a nasty blister on it from stepping on that charger though. Kinda sucks my floor got burnt a bit too. I wonder why this happnd... *UPDATE* Somone from the apple store near me called saying "Yea, im going to need you to bring in your phone to get replaced also, the engineers are going to need to look at it". Great, after having all this hassle with the charger now i hafta set up my phone all over again go to the store, when my phone is working perfectly... Im not too happy at this point. http://grownupgeek.com/my-iphone-charger-burned-me http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=541786 ________________________________________ MKing I actually had to register and let you know that my Iphone cord also caught on fire last night, in the same exact spot. Melted the connection end and a small area on my phone. And if you Google "IPhone Cord Fire" you'll find several pictures of other people who had the same thing happen. Doesn't it seems like this should be looked at by Appple? I had to get a new phone and new connection cables. The Apple Tech who helped me said he's heard of this happening before...great!! Now I don't dare to plug it in! I checked the the connector (original usb connector that came with it) and I could see a burn mark on the iPhone connector and burned plastic between pins 4 and 8 on the cable side connector too. I still do not know what could have happened. My wild guess is that dirt or humidity found its way to the connector and created a short circuit. I have replaced the cable with a 3d party one, and cleaned the iPhone connector with a clean toothbrush. Posted: Sep 19, 2008 by Stig Kristoffersen Events of meltdowns and fires have been reported by consumers in various parts of the world regarding the new iPhone. Events have been reported where the connection between the iPhone and the charger cord melts due to high temperatures. There have been reported events where the battery in the new iPod has taken fire as well. There is an example from Norway where there is observed holes burned through the plastic into the metal of the connector between the iPhone and the charger cord. In Sweden there has been a report on similar incident on the iPhone 3G. The plastic on the charger contact is melted and burnt into the metal under it. In Japan there have been several events where the batteries have taken fire on some models of the iPod. Some of these latter events are due to use of non original batteries. The Ipod is very popular in Japan, and when one of them takes fire during charging there is bound to be trouble. Japanese authorities has ordered the iPod producer Apple to examine the events of an exploding iPod nano in March 2008 closer. This model was one of 425.000 nano’s that Apple has sold in Japan, and is almost identical to millions of others world over. The model went out of market in 2006, and was replaced with a newer model of iPod nano. There is known several cases of fire and explosions connected to this model of iPod, and a handful cases over the world have been documented. Apple conformed in a statement the details around the events, but did not comment it further. Apple commented later that the incidents were connected to one certain type of batteries from Sony. There are more problems for Apple's latest 3G iPhone after reports have started to come in on them catching fire. The most public reports are from Norway and Sweden where the smoking and dead iPhone was displayed in the local press. It appears the fire started when the phone was recharging, which is probably a battery problem and could happen to any device. The iPhone is already becoming buggy and has poor reception problems because Apple installed an immature chipset under the bonnet of the beast. The fact that it did this, even though it was known that this particular chipset had been causing problems for early adopters in Europe for four years, is strange. A software update to fix the reception problems actually makes things worse and buggers up the GPS system that comes with the phone. Apple is keeping quiet about all these problems and some observers are starting to wonder if it will face a product recall. I purchased the iphone in November 08, it’s 4 months old, just a few nights ago, I came home and went to plug my iphone into the charger (that was plugged into the outlet) when I noticed the end of the adapter cord that plugs into the phone had seriously caught fire. My phone was not plugged into the charger when it caught fire, the phone and I weren’t even home! The next day I took the charger into Apple, what was weird was no one was alarmed by my charger being melted down, plasic charred chunks inside the metal tip of the adapter. It was very robotic in their reactions, in fact, I was told they only knew of two of these cases ever happening, and one of the cases from water getting on the metal portion, the other from it bending while plugged into the laptop. Apple Corporate explained this incident as rare to me. My cord was exchanged out without hassle, but, I am worried about the new cord as well. I am on edge, will not charge overnight or absent from the house. Will only charge under supervision, it’s a cell phone! I have too many other things to do and worry about rather than a cell phone charging in a completely safe area! What is going on? Again, I was told that I was a rare case, now that I have looked this problem up, a lot of people are having the exact same problem. Seriously, how are iphone owners dealing with this? He heard a crackling sound, and turned around to see smoke spewing out of the charger connection. He immediately unplugged the charger, and had to grab a towel to pick up the phone, since it was so hot. The charger was black, and the plastic had started to melt. In doing some research online, he discovered this is not a rare occurrence, but has taken place a number of times, occasionally when not even being charged. One person got a burn on his leg when the phone started to burn in his pocket. He went to AT&T for a new phone, but all they would give him was a new charger. He said that he was concerned about the phone itself, and that it might be fried, as well as the connection. They told him to take it up with Apple, which he will do, but it seems to me that this is a serious enough problem to warrant action other than just having the phone replaced. He has three young children, and lives in a high rise, and if there were a fire, they might not get everyone out in time. If you have an iPhone, I would suggest you charge it some place where it can not start a fire - in a sink, on a stone counter - anywhere but on a desk, where there might be papers lying around. ________________________________________ Today, the power cord for my iphone sparked and started smoking. The cord was in a well ventilated area. The cord was not connected to the phone. I immediately called Apple to inform them of what was going on. The representative (a man) "acted" concerned and asked me a list of questions. His tone sounded like this was a common occurrence and Apple products over heated and started smoking all the time. The rep. informed me that I could drive an hour to the nearest Apple retail store and they would give me a new cord and that that was all he could do. He didn't offer to have one shipped; which you think that is what he should have done considering this product could have done errediple harm to my HOUSE OR TO MY FAMILY! After I told him I couldn't drive to the store today I told him I would be in Milwaukee on the weekend he set up a meeting with, "One of the managers I think", the reps words, at the Bayshore store.I told him I would be replacing my new bug ridden iphone (that I bought in July of this year) along with the power cord ofcourse. The rep seemed very unconcerned about the whole thing. Has this happened to anyone else and what would you do concerning the Jacket / Shirt and what do you think Apple should do? I love Apple and continue to be a loyal fan and I'm about to convert our small business to all Apple but im a little disappointed considering the circumstances and potential injury. Would love all comments! Before it melted, the screen flipped backwards as if looking at it in a mirror, and then turned itself off. I restarted it and it was fine for another two hours. I then placed it on the charger and came back to check on it about 30 or 45 minutes later. I was in a hurry to leave my house, so I grabbed it off the charger without really looking at it, and immediately dropped it onto my floor because the melted plastic had burned the tips of two of my fingers. Apple replaced it the following day, but never offered any apologizes or anything for their product burning my hand or for the fire hazard caused by my iPhone. Has anyone even heard of another iPhone actually melting? http://joeygadget.com/2007/07/03/is-your-iphone-too-hot-to-handle/ ________________________________________ ________________________________________ http://gizmodo.com/5032166/iphone-3g-gets-hot-and-melty-cooks-dudes-leg
